Domestic violence is the single major cause of injury to women in the U.S., exceeding rapes, muggings, and car crashes. (Orange County District Attorney's Office)

Approximately 95% of the survivors of spousal abuse are women. (Douglas, H. Families in Society 72 (9) 

Domestic violence is the most underreported crime in the U.S. (Orange County District Attorney's Office) 

Every 1 5 seconds in the U.S. a woman is beaten. (National Council on Domestic Violence)

Up to 50% of all homeless women and children in this country are fleeing domestic violence. (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence Brochure - 1993) 

1/3 of all patients in Hospital Emergency Rooms are victims of domestic violence. ("Crimes Against the Future" Conference March, 1994).

What Are the Signs to Look For

In An Abusive Relationship?

Threats of violence

Breaking or striking things

Physical force towards you or others

Verbal abuse

Jealousy

Possessiveness and lack of trust

Name calling and putdowns

Unrealistic expectations of you

Blaming you for problems

Use of force in sex

Cruelty to children and/or animals

  

How To Leave an Abusive Relationship:

Tell someone about the abuse.

Make a list of emergency numbers.

If injured, document your injuries and go to the nearest hospital for treatment

Make spare keys.

Safely store birth certificates, passports, school and medical records,

immigration paperwork, your car registration outside your home.

Put money aside for cab fare or gas, if needed.

Call police and get officer's name and badge number.
