From Sanford's earliest novels, he punctuated his narrative with historical pieces. In this book, for the first time, Sanford devotes himself solely to non-fiction creative interpreations of American history. This book was hailed as a masterpiece by Robert Kirsch, book critic for the Los Angeles Times. It marked the beginning of a new stage in his writing career.
