This is a study on the relationship between leisure, health, and perceived wellness. You will be asked a series of questions concerning these topics. First, it is important to define these topics so as you may have a clearer understanding of them.
Leisure is is defined as 1) a freely chosen activity 2) spent in time, free from obligation (work or activities related to survival), 3) in pursuit of satisfaction, pleasure and/or meaning. There are numerous leisure activities. Leisure activities can be relatively active or inactive. Just a few examples of leisure activities are excercising, riding a bike, watching TV, reading poetry, writing poetry, mountain climbing, bowling with friends, bowling alone, jumping out of an airplane with a parachute on your back, or attending to hobbies. As you might imagine, the number of leisure activities is virtually unlimited.
In this study you will be presented with questions about the social, physical, and educational aspects of leisure.
A leisure activity that is primarily social in nature is one that provides an opportunity to meet with friends or family, to identify with groups, and satisfies a need for belongingness. Examples of this type of leisure activity are family get-togethers, going to a party, or drinking with friends.
A leisure activity that is primarily educational in nature is one that affords an individual an opportunity for broader experiences, through learning new things, to satisfy curiosities and seek intellectual stimulation. Examples of this type of leisure activity would be attending a lecture, watching a documenatary on TV, learning a new skill, taking a class at a college, visiting an art museum online, travelling throughout another state or foriegn country, or reading a book.
A leisure activity that is primarily physical in nature is one that develops physical fitness, is restorative, and challenges a person physically. This type of leisure activity is one where an individual would exert oneself physically, in activities such as running, weight training, aerobics and the like.
Health is defined as not only an absense of disease, but as a complete state of physical, mental and emotional well-being.
Health locus of control is defined as the degree to which you or other factors are responsible for your current and future health.
Wellness is defined as an advanced state of physical, psychological, and spiritual health.
With these definitions in mind, your task for this study is to rate the following combinations of leisure components as to your preference on a scale of "very very unsatisfying" to "very very satisfying". Each combination represents a suppositional "week of leisure activities" (the amount of time you would spend each week on the leisure activities).
Let's look at an example.
Example
physical: 2 hours
educational: 7 hours
social: 7 hours
very very unsatisfied
very very satisfied
When looking at this example you should be thinking "if I were to consciously manage my free time or leisure time during the week, I would rate a week that included 2 hours of physical activities, 7 hours of social activities, and 7 hours of educational activities" as being somewhere on or between "very very unsatisfying" to "very very satisfying".
Please do the warmups as they will better prepare you for the real portion of the study.
