CSUF TESOL Service Learning Survey

CSUF TESOL Experiential Learning Survey

The CSUF TESOL Program values providing learning experiences outside the classroom in its methodology and pedagogy classes. These types of learning experiences are called experiential learning. Service learning (any unpaid voluntary service assignment) is one type of experiential learning. Paid tutoring or teaching, independent research projects which utilize the community, and classroom observations are other types of experiential learning.

As you know, TESOL students must take two methodology classes and one pedagogy course while in the program. Since Fall 2001, all students have been required to do a minimum of 20 hours of service learning in one of these methodology/pedagogy classes:

TESL 509 (formerly FLED 443A) Listening and Speaking Methods
TESL 510 (formerly FLED 443B) Reading and Writing Methods
TESL 515 (formerly FLED 470) Pedagogical Grammar
TESL 520 (formerly FLED 520) Pronunciation and Discourse

If you entered the CSUF TESOL Program before Fall 2001, you did not have a service learning requirement, but you did have "experiential" learning assignments that required you to observe, tutor, or teach English learners. Please keep your experiences in these courses in mind as you answer the following questions.

As best you can remember, did you have a service learning requirement when you were a CSUF TESOL student?

If you had a service learning requirement, how many semesters did you do service learning?
