Shepherd-McMullen, C., Mearns, J., Stokes, J., & Mechanic, M. (2015). Negative mood regulation expectancies
moderate the relationship between psychological abuse and avoidant coping. Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 30, 1553-1566.
In a sample of female college students, those experiencing higher levels of psychological abuse in their current or recent romantic relationship had lower NMRE. Psychological abuse was a significant predictor of avoidant coping, while NMRE significantly predicted both active and avoidant coping. Additionally, the interaction of NMRE x psychological abuse added incremental prediction of avoidant coping. As the level of psychological abuse increases, the avoidant coping of those low in NMRE increases more rapidly than of those high in NMRE.
