In a sample of Japanese undergraduates, negative mood regulation expectancies mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and subsequent nonsuicidal self-injury. Also, strong expectancies for social support, especially from friends, increased confidence in regulating emotion, which protected against self-injury.
