Catanzaro, S. J., Wasch, H. H., Kirsch, I., & Mearns, J. (2000). Coping-related
expectancies and dispositions as prospective predictors of coping
responses and symptoms.
Journal of Personality, 68, 757-788.
This article presents two studies clarifying the theoretical distinctions between coping-related expectancies (what people believe the outcome of their attempts to cope will be) and coping dispositions (tendencies to engage in particular types of coping responses). We used the structural equation modeling approach to examine links among negative mood regulation (NMR) expectancies, coping and depression. Results showed NMR expectancies prospectively predicted depressive symptoms, independent of coping tendencies.
