Mearns, J., & Cain, J. E. (2003). Relationships between teachers' cccupational stress
and their burnout and distress: Roles of coping and negative mood regulation
expectancies.
Anxiety, Stress and Coping, 16, 71-82.
This study looked at how NMR expectancies relate to the way teachers cope with their occupational stress, and to how much feeling of burnout and distress they report. Participants were primary and secondary school teachers. More job stress was associated with more burnout and distress. NMR expectancies were associated with more active coping. And, NMR expectancies predicted burnout and distress, independent of coping and job stress. We conclude it is important to examine individual difference variables when researching occupational stress.
